flat Stanley/event 3

I think I had to forgive flat Stanley today. Flat Stanley felt really guilty after the awkward thing he did that Saturday night (drinking beer…). I tried to talk to him and tell him that everyone does silly things at times but he seemed even more depressed after I talked to him. I decided to take him to Calvary Chapel church with me so that Pastor Fred could talk to him.

At the church we sang some worship songs and listened to Pastor Fred’s preaching. I looked at Flat Stanely, he was smiling again (oh I had missed his charming smile). He got so happy when Pastor Fred told him that God is king and will forgive him if he repents. So he did and promised to remain faithful to the 10 commandments. Then every one at the church wanted to listen to my Stanley’s testimony. I am so proud of you Stanley.

Flat Stanley is really trying hard to socialize with everyone he sees. Tonight he insisted on going to a restaurant so that he could meet new people. He is getting so hard to control and sometimes I just don’t understand him. May be it’s because of the age gap. You know what?  Tonight flat Stanley drank beer at Ruby’s. When he was asked to show his ID card, he showed my friend’s ID Kotaro (without his permission!). Interestingly the waiter didn’t notice the difference between these two faces, can you believe it? My flat Stanley drank beer with Kotaro’s ID! Now I am so mad at him. Thanks God at least he could understand that he had to let ME drive home.

This Saturday, afternoon Flat Stanley was really bored and was nagging a lot. Before I lose my temper, I called my friend Kotaro and started chatting with him to forget that Flat Stanley was nagging. Interestingly, he said that his flat Stanley, also known as Stanley Herada was really bored and suggested going to see Avatar in 3D. You can’t imagine how excited my flat Stanley got when he heard that we were planning to watch Avatar. He was so excited that we left home early and although the movie was at 5.10, we got there at 4. The good thing about his excitement was that he didn’t ask for popcorns or hotdogs and made a bee line to Saloon #17where we watched Avatar. He looked so funny with the 3D glasses.  Everything looked so real with these glasses. It was funny when he reached his hands once to catch the little birds. “It was as if the birds were right in front of my nose”, he said.

When the movie was over I asked him if he liked the movie and he said” from now on, if someone asks me what creativity means, I just tell him watch Avatar”.

PREP

Prep

PREP is a technique that can help use avoid beating around the bush and make things easier to be understood.
P stands for the main point you want to mention. WE can start with an expression like " the point I want to make is ...."

R stands for the reason behind the point. It means you can support your idea just mentioned.

E stands for Example. Nothing can clarify the point like a tangible example.

P stands for Point again. Ending the speech with a summary gives your thoughts a more coherent framework. You can finish like " In summary my point is ..."

Story telling

Everyone, not only kids, enjoys listening to stories. In fact storytelling can be used as a useful classroom technique to present a point or lesson. What I learned in that session about the art of storytelling, can be summarized as follows:
1. You can try o find an original story. Listeners will lose their interes as oon as they find out the story is not new. It really doesn't matter that the story is real or not, it is important to tell it in the most effective way.

2. Instead of strating with "once upon a time" we can start with a "provocative bait", something that attracts the listeners to pay attention.

3. Instead of confusing your listeners with repeated back and forth and flashback echniques ( remember Vanila sky movie?
361
) set the actions in a step by step motion.

4. When you build up each scene of the story, you can clearly go one without confusingyour listeners. I loved the idea of "snowball picture" because it helped me understand how gradually we are spposed to add to the story.

5. It is important to be specfic so that the listeners know what the main point of focus.

6. Even when the story is a serious one, it is not a bad idea to add a few funny points to cheer up the listeners.

7. While you are telling the story stop, give a reflection, observation, or digression rather that continue nonstop as if you want to get rid of the burdan of telling the story.

8. Thanks to our flexible larynx we can change the voice when characters or modds change. No one likes to listen to a monotonous  voice.

9. We can try to surprise people by adding an unexpected ending instead of just finishing with "and they lived hly ever after". This way, not only they listen but also remember the story.

10. Keep eye contact with everyone present. Do not stare at a point as if thea ghost is whispeing the words to your ears.
